Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to the meeting on Indirect Calorimetry in Rodent Models: Applications to Studies of the Metabolic Syndrome, organized as a post-congress satellite of the 13th European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Prague. Although at times neglected, indirect calorimetry is a classical technique and a critical tool in research on metabolic diseases. This is not only due to technical developments which have brought the technique to a new level of sensitivity and have added multifunctional modes of monitoring additional aspects of the phenotype of the experimental animal, but it is also reflection of the necessity to characterize the metabolic features of many new models of mice and rats developed by genetic manipulation as well as by conventional breeding in order to unmask specific phenotypes and for elucidation of metabolic effects of specific diets. The use of such models is particularly rewarding for studies of the pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome. Indirect calorimetry is being increasingly applied in this field, implying the necessity for better understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the method by many scientists. Therefore, we hope that this meeting will be rewarding for the participants.

Looking forward to welcoming you to Prague,

Barbara Cannon, Jan Kopecky, and Jan Nedergaard

Members of the Scientific Committee
